Why Children Need Less Screen Time (and What to Do Instead)

In today’s world, children are growing up with screens everywhere – from tablets and TVs to phones and gaming devices. While technology can be a helpful, too much screen time can start to crowd out the things that children need the most: movement, connection, and real-life play.

Nearly half of Australian families (43%) report that their child aged 11–15 spends more than three hours a day on small screens, exceeding the recommended daily limit of less than two hours outlined in Australia’s 24‑Hour Movement Guidelines.

It has been shown that excessive screen time is linked to reduced physical activity, disrupted sleep, and fewer opportunities for face-to-face social interaction. Over time, this can greatly impact the overall wellbeing and development of children.

The good news? It doesn’t take a complete overhaul to make a difference.

It’s true that simple, active alternatives – like outdoor play, group games, or even something as classic as skipping rope – can help children reset, recharge, and reconnect with others. These moments of movement not only support physical health but build confidence and resilience too.

At TeamKids, we see the impact of this every day. Through initiatives like, The TK Big Skip, in partnership with Dairy Farmers, children are encouraged to step away from screens and try something active, fun, and social. Whether it’s learning their first skip or mastering a new trick, every small win counts.

For families, it can start with small changes:

  • Encouraging outdoor play after school
  • Setting regular/routine screen-free times
  • Introducing fun, active activities children can enjoy with their friends

Because when children move more, they feel energised, better connected and more confident. And, that’s what childhood should be all about – more movement, more connection, and more Oomph! 💛
