It doesn’t have to be complicated getting your child to be more active every day. In fact, some of the best ways to encourage movement are the simplest ones.
Whether it’s a quick game in the backyard, a walk to the park, or a skipping challenge with friends, small moments of activity can make a big difference to your child’s day.
Two‑fifths (39%) of Australian families estimate that their children spend no more than 30 minutes a day doing moderate to vigorous physical activity – well below the 60 minutes or more recommended in Australia’s 24‑Hour Movement Guidelines.
Regular movement helps children:
- Build strength and coordination
- Improve focus and mood
- Develop confidence by trying new things
One of the easiest ways to get started is by making activity feel like play, not a chore. Skipping, for example, is a fun, low-cost activity that children of all ages can enjoy, whether they’re just starting out or learning new tricks.
At TeamKids, our Term 2 2026 challenge, The TK Big Skip, is all about making movement accessible, social and fun. All children are encouraged to give it a go, learn at their own pace and celebrate their progress along the way.
Also, it’s important to support active play with the right fuel. According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, foods like fruit, yoghurt, and milk can help provide the nutrients children need to stay energised and ready to go.
A few simple habits can go a long way:
- Encourage outdoor play after school
- Join in where you can – children love it when adults get involved
- Keep activities fun and pressure-free
Because when movement becomes part of everyday life, children don’t just stay active – they thrive.
And, that’s what The TK Big Skip is all about: more movement, more confidence, and more Oomph! 💛
