Providing a well-balanced, nutritious diet for your child is essential for their overall health and development. By taking time to establish healthy eating habits now, you can set the foundation for a lifetime of good choices. Helping your child learn about healthy eating doesn’t have to be dull or difficult. With a few enjoyable activities and routines, you can guide your child to grow into a healthy adult.

How We Talk About Food Matters

How you talk about food is just as important as what you serve. Instead of labelling foods as “good” or “bad,” explain that all foods can fit into a healthy eating plan. Consider calling some foods “everyday foods” and others “party foods” to help your child understand the difference between healthier options and those meant for occasional indulgence. “Party foods” tend to be higher in saturated fats, added sugars, and salt, while “everyday foods” are typically richer in fibre and nutrients.

Establishing simple routines can help your child form a positive, lifelong relationship with food. Here are a few key strategies:

  1. Family Meals: Eating together is one of the most powerful ways to teach healthy eating habits. During family meals, your child can observe how others eat, learn about the importance of regular meal times, and recognise their own hunger and fullness cues.
  2. Lead by Example: Children often mimic their parents’ behaviour. Let your child see you making positive food choices, trying a variety of foods, and prioritising family meals.
  3. Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate when your child makes healthy choices or tries new foods. Encouraging them in these moments will motivate them to continue making good choices in the future.
  4. Peer Involvement: Seeing other children enjoy and interact with food can inspire your child to explore new tastes and textures. In settings like school or their TeamKids program, watching their peers can serve as positive reinforcement, encouraging your child to step outside their comfort zone and try new things.

Make Learning About Food Fun

Incorporate fun, interactive activities to help your child learn about healthy eating:

  • Use flashcards to introduce different foods and their food groups.
  • Involve your child in preparing their lunchbox to foster independence and help them understand how to include proteins, carbohydrates, and plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables
  • Use colouring sheets that feature new foods and teach them how to build a balanced, healthy plate.
  • Turn grocery shopping into a fun, hands-on learning experience. Let your child help create the shopping list, take them to the store, and encourage them to touch and explore fruits and vegetables. They might even want to pick out something new to try!
  • Cook or bake together. This helps your child learn essential skills, from meal preparation to understanding how food can be enjoyed both on a regular day or during special occasions.
  • Growing your own food in the backyard offers a hands-on lesson about where food really comes from (spoiler: not the supermarket!)

Be Patient and Celebrate Successes

Remember, creating healthy habits takes time, so be patient with yourself and your child. Celebrate your progress along the way—each step counts! You’re helping to set your child up for a lifetime of healthy eating and well-being.
