Weekends are sacred. For most families it’s a time to spend together and relax after a busy week of activity. Parents have typically been at work and the kids have had school work, after school activities or before and after school care to attend. The weekend is often a time where you can all be together in the same place.

  • Sleep in and have a pyjama day – there’s no need to leave the house to spend quality time together
  • Go for a bike ride together and explore your local surroundings
  • Visit a park or garden you’ve never been to before
  • Play board games. You could even turn it into a competition and invite friends and family to join in
  • Go to the zoo, aquarium or animal park. If there’s none around you, go somewhere you can see some local wildlife such as birds or lizards
  • Have a picnic lunch in nature (or even in your own backyard!)
  • Invite friends, family or neighbours over for a simple BBQ dinner
  • Go out to a café for breakfast
  • Have a craft / DIY day where you fix what’s broken or create something new
  • Spend some time in the garden. If you don’t have one already, create one
  • Write letters to relatives or friends in another state or country
  • Visit your local library to borrow books, magazines, DVDs, CDs or audiobooks
  • Go for a nature walk and pay close attention to your surroundings
  • Visit another town or city close to you and explore it together
  • Catch a bus, train, tram or ferry – just for the fun of it!
  • Go to a restaurant that no one in the family has been to yet
  • Watch the sunset or sunrise together
  • Be a tourist in your own town and visit some places you’ve always been meaning to see but haven’t gotten to yet
  • Organise a treasure hunt for each other
  • Cook up a storm. Bake some treats or cook meals in advance for the upcoming week.

No matter what you do together, enjoy the time the weekend affords you and make some memories for the future. On Monday it’ll be back to work, before school care, day care and school and it’s always nice to go armed with good stories from the weekend.
